Hi everyone! In this introductory blog post, I’d like to answer a question for you: what is autism? Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect an individual’s ability to communicate and engage in social situations.
Although they will vary from person to person, some general characteristics include:
- Difficulty with social communication
- Challenges in understanding their peers during social interaction
- Repetitive behaviors
- Highly specific interests and recreational activities
- Increased sensitivity to sensory input (sounds, lights, textures, tastes, smells)
- Resistance to change and inclination to follow routines
- Cognitive and learning differences
- Different levels of communication ability
Importantly, Autism is an encompassing term for a broad spectrum of behaviors. It recognizes the individuality of each person’s symptoms and the degree to which they might present themselves. No two individuals with autism are alike, which makes it every more important to tailor any medication and therapy to meet their specific needs.
